Course syllabus
After analysing some assumptions of translation theory and becoming familiar with the translator's profession and the tools supporting this activity (online resources, parallel and comparable texts, glossaries, corpora, terminology management and computer-aided translation programs, etc.), we will proceed to the practical application of the notions acquired through the translation from German into Italian of authentic documents belonging to various textual genres in the business and technical-promotional field. In addition to the translation of the assigned texts, the elaboration of a glossary of specialist terms is required and, in some cases, revision in pairs.
Prerequisites for admission
Very good knowledge of the German language, excellent reading comprehension skills, ability to use dictionaries, word processing softwares and search tools available on the web, good writing skills in Italian.
Teaching methods
Analysis of the professional translator's work based on pratical examples; individual translation of texts and collective correction/discussion in the classroom; revision of translated texts in pairs.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Exam: oral test preceded by individual written work. Written work: drafting of a bilingual glossary (German-Italian) of the specialist terms of the texts translated during the course and of twenty terminology sheets drawn from them, according to the methods described in the Ariel page of the course. Oral test: sight translation of the texts dealt with during the course and verification of the knowledge of the theoretical contents of the reference manual.

Written test consisting of two parts. The first part tests the knowledge of the theoretical contents and the domain-specific terminology of the texts translated during the course by means of short open questions (duration: 30 minutes); the second part tests the ability to translate a specialist text relating to one of the areas dealt with in the two modules (length: about 2000 characters, including spaces; duration: 90 minutes). The first part takes place on paper, the second part involves the use of a personal computer with access to all online resources except for e-mail and instant messaging programs.
