Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the tools for analysing European figurative art between the 4th and 13th centuries, with particular attention to iconography and contextual relationships.

Knowledge: Knowledge of the artistic culture of the Western Church in connection to liturgical practices and ideologies.

Title 2019/2020: From Carolingian sumptuary art to Romanesque monumental art
The course aims to present historically and critically the figurative art of the Carolingian and Ottonian age as a precondition for the Romanesque art.
Teaching Unit A: The 'precious' art of the Carolingian age
Teaching Unit B: The art of the Ottonian empire and the Italic kingdom
Teaching Unit C: Romanesque monumental sculpture and painting
The course aims to present historically and critically the figurative art of the Carolingian and Ottonian age as a precondition for the Romanesque art.

Suitable knowledge of the main artefacts of western figurative art between the 4th and 13th centuries.

Teaching Units A-B-C
Students must know the handouts, which are distributed at the end of each teaching unit of the course. Students must be able to recognise and to comment the images shown during the lectures. It is also required the knowledge of the illustrations of the following book: Arte medievale. Le vie dello spazio liturgico, P. Piva (ed.), edizione aggiornata, Milano 2012. Students who have not taken the exam of Medieval Art History for Bachelor must add a relative Textbook.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an interview on the scheduled topics, aimed at verifying the student's knowledge, his critical thinking and speaking skills.
