Medical Pathophysiology
A.Y. 2019/2020
Learning objectives
At the end of the course the student must be able to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the main pathologies of organs and systems, with particular regard to those aspects that constitute the biological foundation and the object of the laboratory diagnostic approach.
Expected learning outcomes
The course will provide students with principles of the clinical approach to diagnosis and treatment of neoplasms and their complications, so that they can understand and use the 'vocabulary' of clinical oncology and clinical studies on cancer in their interactions with other professionals and/or in the advancement of their studies.
Knowledge of the main pathophysiological bases of cardiovascular, respiratory and gastroenterological diseases and their application to clinical practice focusing on the laboratory diagnostic aspects.
To know the clinical presentation and the pathophysiology of the main endocrine diseases
To know the most important hormonal tests, the main dynamic testing and imaging techniques
The student will be able to know which are the main laboratory changes associated with renal diseases, and the most relevant electrolyte and acid-base derangements.
The course will provide the student with the basics to understand the molecular and biological mechanisms of blood diseases and their classification systems, in order to acquire the information for carrying out laboratory diagnostic tests useful for characterizing these forms.

Single course
This course cannot be attended as a single course. Please check our list of single courses to find the ones available for enrolment.
Course syllabus and organization
Single session
Responsible
Prerequisites for admission
The student must have previously acquired the general concepts of eukaryotic cell biology and those of biochemistry and molecular biology and basic knowledge concerning human anatomy and physiology, as well as those related to immunology and general pathology.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will be written and will concern the topics listed in the program. In particular, each student will be given a test with 10 multiple choice questions and 2 questions chosen from the topics of the five modules of the course for which the student must make a written paper. Where required, in case of special needs, pre-appeals are also provided. With the help of slides and laboratory tests, each student will be provided with all the tools necessary for passing the exams.
