Learning objectives
Il corso si propone l'obiettivo di fornire agli studenti una conoscenza generale delle principali riflessioni teoriche elaborate in ambito traduttologico e delle conseguenti metodologie e tecniche applicabili alla traduzione di testi scritti di diverse tipologie, oltre all'acquisizione della terminologia specifica propria della disciplina.
Tali competenze permetteranno inoltre agli studenti, nel confronto diretto con un corpus di testi narrativi in lingua spagnola da tradurre in italiano, di potenziare le loro capacità di: analisi testuale; individuazione delle peculiarità linguistico-retoriche di un'opera; elaborazione di una strategia traduttiva; documentazione linguistica attraverso risorse lessicografiche (dizionari, corpora, banche dati); resa italiana di un testo letterario in lingua straniera; valutazione critica della qualità e delle caratteristiche di traduzioni italiane di opere narrative spagnole e ispano-americane.
Expected learning outcomes
Al termine del corso, lo studente dovrà essere in grado di:
- riflettere criticamente sulle principali teorie traduttologiche, sia in chiave storico-culturale che metodologica;
- analizzare un testo in lingua spagnola in vista dell'elaborazione di una strategia traduttiva;
- utilizzare consapevolmente le proprie competenze linguistiche, letterarie e traduttologiche per la produzione della versione italiana di un testo in lingua spagnola;
- conoscere e saper usare i principali strumenti lessicografici, cartacei e informatici, impiegati professionalmente in ambito traduttivo;
- motivare e commentare, in forma scritta o orale, le proprie scelte traduttive;
- esaminare criticamente una o più traduzioni italiane di un testo letterario in lingua spagnola.

Course syllabus
The course conists of three teaching units, which will proceed simultaneously:
A (F. Fava): Contemporary translation studies
B (F. Fava): Translating Spanish contemporary fiction: a methodological approach
C (E. Passoni): Prose translation practice within boundaries between journalism, fiction and non-fiction

Students who mean to acquire 6 CFU in total, will comply with units A and B of the program. Students who intend to acquire 9 CFU will comply with the full program (units A, B, and C).

Unit A deals with some of the most relevant literary translation theories developed in the last fifty years in the field of (not only) Spanish studies. Essays by F. Buffoni, V. Magrelli, J. Ortega y Gasset, O. Paz, A. Berman, L. Blini, F. Fava will be read and discussed in class.
Unit B will consist of reading and translating fiction texts by Spanish and Hispano-American authors, focusing on linguistic, rhetorical and stylitic difficulties specific to each author. Texts by J. Marías, J.J. Millás, M. Vargas Llosa, J.C. Onetti, J.L. Borges, J. Cortazar, A. Monterroso, J.J. Saer, and others will be read and nalyzed in class.
Unit C practices will consist of a translation workshop which will deal with texts of different genres, ranging from reportage to popoular non-fiction, from children's literature to contemporary fiction. Among the authors who will be translated there will be J.L. Alonso de Santos, R. Montero, F. Savater, C.A. Molina, D. Redondo, R.D. Eterovic, J. Villoro

The program of the 2019-20 course runs until February 2021. Starting from 2021 summer session, only students prepared on the 2020-21 program will be admitted.
Prerequisites for admission
The course, which will be taught in Italian, implies the reading, translation, and discussion of texts in Spanish, and requires strong skills in both languages as well as a proper ability in analysing syntactical, rethorical, and stylistic structures.
If interested in the course, students coming from other careers or with different curricula must get in touch with the professor in order to determine whether any adjustments to the program are required. Erasmus students, or students taking part in other exchange programs, will be admitted if provided with strong skills in both Spanish and Italian languages.
Teaching methods
This is a seminar course. The three units are based on active participation of the students who are expected to take part in the workshop, to analyse and examine different translations of a single text, and to discuss different theoretical perspectives and approaches to translation.
In Unit B and C students are supposed to translate a short text every week, which will be then analysed and commented in class.
Teaching Resources
All teaching materials will be supplied by professors during the course, and will be both printed and digitally uploaded for the students in the Unimi Ariel platform.
As pointed out in the program description, compulsory texts for each unit will coincide with the texts discussed during the lessons.
In addition to the texts read and/or translated during the classes, students will be provided with an extra critic-methodological literature, so to further investigate the discussed subjects and issues.

Not attending students
Due to the specific nature and the practical approach of the course, attendance is strictly recommended. For this reason, students who do not attend the course are kindly invited to contact the professor during the course (i.e. before the end of classes) in order to arrange a custom program, with adequate preparation and evaluation.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Unit B and C include a written translation exam at the end of the course. The exam will be later discussed together with the students and will contribute to the final evaluation.
The oral test is an individual interview which will consist of questions about theoretical essays of the Unit A, of professor-student interactions and of observations about translation choices of one or more of the texts of the course.
Oral test aims to prove the knowledge of the essays, the ability in evaluating the peculiarities of each text, the expositive skills, the accuracy in using critical terminology, the expertise in analysing texts and making methodological considerations about texts and different translation options. Upon the student's request, the interview will be in Italian or Spanish. The final mark is expressed in thirtieth, and the student will be free to accept or reject it (in this last case, it will be recorded as "ritirato").

International or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the professor in due time. According to the Office in charge, students with disabilities and/or DSA students are invited to agree the examination procedure directly with the professor.
