Learning objectives
This course aims to introduce students to key topics in Arab culture seen in their own historical and socio-political context. During the two years of study, students will acquire a basic knowledge of the political and cultural history of the Arab world from the 6th century onwards, the key concepts of islam and the contemporary Arab socio-political context.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able to analyse and discuss critically the topics treated during the course.

Lesson period
Second semester
In case the emergency period is prolonged to the second semester, lectures will be sinchronous on MS Teams (code lotqeu0); in specific cases, which will be communicated in advance, synchronous lectures will be replaced by pre-recorded videos. The timetable is unchanged and all the most important information will be provided through the Ariel website of the course.
Course syllabus
The course is divided into two parts
1- Introduction to the Arab World: students will be introduced to the birth and formation of Arab culture in its historical, political, literary and religious aspects.
2- Arab-Islamic culture: introduction to key concepts of religious culture in Arab societies.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of current socio-political issues concerning the Arab world is assumed.
Teaching methods
As well as the titular lecturers, invited experts will deliver talks during the course. The Ariel website for the course contains a Course Blog, detailing the contents and activities for each class as well as additional references.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an interview in which students will have to demonstrate their knowledge of the course topics and set texts, and the ability to contextualize, comment and discuss them in the light of the analytical tools provided during the course. Part of the exam may be in the form of a written questionnaire with open answers.
