Learning objectives
The aim is to provide the necessary knowledge for managing the cultivation of the main ornamental species, in greenhouses and in the open air, highlighting the problems and proposing possible solutions, with particular reference to the most innovative ones. Furthermore, the basic knowledge for the installation and maintenance of the different types of turf will be provided. The ultimate goal is to train competent professional figures for the horticultural sector, with adequate technical and critical skills.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will acquire a knowledge of the characteristics and problems of the ornamental crop sector and will obtain a preparation for cultivating the main species in greenhouses and in open air. In addition, he will acquire skills in the installation and management of different types of turf.

Teaching methods
The lessons will be held asynchronously via Power point with audio, loaded into Ariel according to the teaching schedule. Periodically (approximately every five lessons) a synchronous lesson will be held on the Teams platform to answer students' questions and carry out any further information.
If it will not possible to organize a technical visit, the sites of specialized horticultural companies will be indicated for virtual visits.
Information about the organization of lessons will be available in Ariel, that is therefore recommended to consult frequently.

The program and the reference material will not change.

Assessment methods
Learning will be assessed through an oral examination using Skype or similar platform.
The assessment will consider the achievement of the objectives, in particular the acquired knowledge, the critical ability and the properties of language. The evaluations will be expressed in thirtieths.
Course syllabus
Origin and history of floriculture.
Floriculture in Italy, types of cultivation.
The greenhouses.
Growing substrates.
The different types of containers for propagation and cultivation.
Soilless culture.
Fertilization and irrigation management.
Growth control of plants: growth retardants, DIF and cool-morning, brushing, shaking, impedence.
Physiology and post-harvest technology of cut flowers.
Application of plant growth regulators in floriculture.
Plant nursery and propagation.
Biotechnology in floriculture.
Botanical description and cultivation technique of some of the most important species: rose, gerbera, carnation, gladiolus, azalea and rhododendron, cyclamen, plus a species chosen by the student to be presented for examination.
Introduction and economic importance of lawns.
Types of lawns: functional, ornamental and recreational, sports.
The species and mixtures used.
Cultivation techniques: seedbed preparation, planting, fertilizing, irrigation, cutting, weed control, phytosanitary treatments.
