Learning objectives
The course has two main objectives: first introducing core concepts and analytical tools essential to interpret global geopolitics. Four core pillars will be the conceptual infrastructure of the first part of the course : territoriality, power, political arenas and sovereignty. Second, the course aim to analyze empirical trends in different domains of international politics. The course will do an overview on issues of "butter & guns" (trade and war), then it will move the focus on other forms of insecurities and instabilities. The course will also introduce ideational changes over time an major future challenges to the geopolitics: global demographics and health.
Expected learning outcomes
Students by the end of the course will have tackled and scrutinized central concepts such as hegemony, sovereignty and interdependencies. Moreover, through the use of case studies but also data trends students will have acquired a critical knowledge of major issues in global geopolitics. Hence, students will have learned how to interpret current affairs and major historical using the concepts and analytical tools provide by the course. Moreover, they will have a knowledge of the major current debates and challenges in international politics.
