Hormones/phytohormones and Metabolic Diseases
A.Y. 2020/2021
Learning objectives
The course intends to provide knowledge on the endocrine systems under physiopathological conditions and their interaction with phytohormones.
The unit of Hormones/Phytohormones will discuss the general concepts of endocrinology, with a particular view on endocrine axes and the effects of phytohormones, such as phytosterols and phytoestrogens, on the systems correlated with them.
The unit of Metabolic Pathologies will provide knowledge on metabolic biomarkers and pathologies, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, eating disorders and bone metabolism.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the teaching the student must demonstrate a solid knowledge of endocrinology and phytohormones as well as of metabolic pathologies.

First semester
Teaching methods:
The course will be blended. Thus, it is organized with face-to-face lessons (according to the calendar provided during the first lesson), on the Microsoft Teams platform following the official timetable and asynchronous, through recorded audio ppt. All the material (namely: lessons pdf, audio ppt and recordings of face-to-face lessons (as defined in the first lesson) as well as on platform) will be made available on the Ariel pages.
During the course, activities will be offered to attending students (also via platform). These activities will be evaluated and will be considered for the purpose of passing the exam. Non-attending students will deepen different aspects through texts made available on the Ariel pages.
Furthermore, the methods and criteria for participating in face-to-face lessons, which require a reservation with a special app, will be published in time on the Ariel pages of the course, as well as all the above material and notices relating to any related updates. the evolution of the legislation imposed by Covid-19.
REFERENCE MATERIALS:
The program and reference material will not change.
LEARNING VERIFICATION AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:
The exam will be in oral form using the Microsoft Teams platform or in presence, if allowed.
The exam will evaluate learning of the basic concepts of endocrinology, functioning of the major axes, pathological aspects treated during the course; the language property and the ability to organize the exposition in a complete way will be also evaluated. The evaluation will take into account participation in the activities proposed during the course. In the case of non-attending students, topics to be deepen will be considered.
