Learning objectives
The course aims to train students on the methods and approaches to be implemented in the field and in the laboratory for controlling mastitis in dairy ruminants, especially focusing on emerging technologies for mastitis monitoring and on traditional and innovative methods for identification and characterization of etiological agents. Prevention measures and alternatives to antibiotics will also be briefly introduced.
Expected learning outcomes
At course completion the student will have an updated perspective on methods and technologies that can be applied for detecting, monitoring and controlling mastitis and intramammary infection in dairy ruminants. Students will also acquire analytical and presenting skills related to the course topics.

Course syllabus
Class lectures:
Mastitis and IMI - general overview and introduction to the innovative diagnostic approaches for the field and the lab (inflammation markers, differential somatic cell count).
Innovations on the methods for detecting and identifying mastitis pathogens (qPCR, MALDI-TOF-MS, on-farm culture);
Techniques for the molecular characterization of microorganisms and basic concepts of molecular epidemiology (RAPD, PFGE, WGS, and their applications);
Innovations on the detection and monitoring of antibiotic resistance and strategies for the reduction of antibiotic use;
Vaccines: pitfalls and perspectives
Managing small ruminant mastitis: what are the differences?

Practical activities:
The analytical workflow of a milk sample: from the SCC to bacteriological culture;
PCR assay for detecting Staphylococcus aureus in milk;
The application of MALDI-TOF-MS for the identification of mastitis pathogens.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of microbiology is advised.
