Methods and Technologies of Music Publishing

Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the main methodological and historical elements of music publishing, framing them into the historical background and analyzing them from both the theoretical and applicative viewpoints.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will know the historical and technical aspects related to music notation and writing, as well as those related to music printing, publishing, and philology.

Practical problems of editing technique: panoramic analysis of the set of technical problems that arise for the creation and dissemination of scores.
The main international digital music writing platforms: Finale, Sibelius, the other notation software, sequencers and their notational part.
Optical recognition of musical text: the digital multiplication of the text with the transition from the analog format static to dynamic digital.
The main international platforms for optical recognition of musical text: Vivaldiscan, Photoscore, Smartscore e
other optical music recognition software.
The limits of optical scanning: paper supports, refinement of recognition, complexity of writing, information textual, exact attribution of the contrapuntal lines. The frontiers of recognition and handwritten music.
Static information and structured or dynamic information. The different proprietary formats.
The formats of compatibility and interchange of digital information: MIDI, XML, NIFF, ETF.
Protection and dissemination of intellectual property through the format: problems and techniques for digital publishing worldwide (PDF limitations; Plug-ins; ScoreShare).
Music score libraries on the net: IMSLP, Mutopia Project, Bach digital, Beethovenhaus and other portals.
Developments in the communication of the musical text from the past to today.
Musical Philology and the concepts of transmission, reconstruction and presentation of the musical text, of last will by the author.
The reviewers and the general aesthetic rules applied to the compositions of the past. The philological character recovered with the concept of Critical Edition and Urtext. The various types of edition.
