Learning objectives
-to acquire the ability to recognize the main changes in behavior and subjective experiences in the geriatric age and the main psychopathological disorders in the elderly;
-to improve the knowledge of the main conditions of mental disorder and acquire the ability to adopt targeted interventions, from a healing and rehabilitative point of view;
- to acquire the ability to establish and maintain supportive relationship with the patient and with his / her family members, adopting the main principles of relational dynamics;
-to study the specific rehabilitation techniques for the geriatric age;
- to acquire the ability to collaborate in the planning and improvement of rehabilitative interventions, adopting targeted methods in elderly's support.
Expected learning outcomes
-to learn how to recognize mental disorder in the elderly and learn how to guide rehabilitative interventions, in order to set proper treatments;
-to acquire the ability to establish correct relationship with caregivers; to know how to adopt rehabilitation techniques in geriatrics.

Course syllabus and organization

Teaching activities will be held both in presential mode and at distance (synchronous mode) using MS Teams platform.
Assessment of the learning: Microsoft Teams (oral examination) and Moodle (written examination).
Prerequisites for admission
Basic pharmacology, drug-receptor interaction, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles. Psychiatric clinical principles and general psychopathology
Assessment methods and Criteria
Assessment of the learning will take place through a oral /written tests, including multiple choice questions.
The evaluation criteria used will be the ability to list and organize the acquired knowledges as well as their application for the resolution of short questions. The evaluation of the teaching will be expressed in 30th and will be the result of the weighted average of the votes acquired in each module of the teaching. The results of the tests will be communicated to the students through online verbalization system of university.

Presentation of the concept of rehabilitation in the elderly starting from the bio-psycho-social model, historical background and epidemiological dimension of the problem. Concept of frailty. Types of rehabilitation for the depressed elderly (psychological approach, psychomotricity, psycho-sensory stimulation, art-therapy, musictherapy etc.). Prognostic aspects and limitations of rehabilitation in the elderly. Case reports.

Cognitive rehabilitation in the elderly
Ageing between genetics and environment, the concept of aging according to the discipline of reference (biology, psychology, sociology). Geriatric framework of old age: index of old age, epidemiological data on ageing. Macroscopic anatomo-structural and flow-measuring modifications.
The concept of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the concept of cognitive reserve. Mechanisms of neuronal plasticity (redundancy, synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis). Cognitive stimulation and the concept of cognitive well-being.

Multidisciplinary approach to cognitive pathology
Elderly aging and nervous system. Cognitive reserve and frailty, basic and instrumental activities of everyday life. Delirium and dementias, psychological and behavioural disorders of dementias. caregivers. Estimation and measurement of deficits and response to treatment. No Psychopharmacological Treatments.
