Learning objectives
The course consists of lectures (corso monografico) and practical language classes (esercitazioni). Lectures aim to present the main features of the functional styles of Russian language and to analyze, according to a pragmalinguistic approach, Russian texts of different styles. In a part of the course the main types of subordinate sentences encountered in the analyzed texts will be deepen. Practical language classes will develop the skills to understand oral texts of different styles, as well as to produce oral and written texts in different styles at B2 level.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: introduction to the concept of stylistics and to the linguistic styles in Russian language; lexical, structural, morphological, syntactic and pragmatic peculiarities of scientific/critical, literary, publicistic, colloquial, official and business texts; development of the vocabulary and structures necessary to analyze texts of different styles; deepening of the main types of subordinate sentences of the Russian language. Applying knowledge and understanding: at the end of lectures students will be able to identify the texts of the different considered styles and to analyze them from lexical, morphological, syntactic, structural and pragmatic point of view. They will be also able to use correctly the typical structures of the different styles and the main types of analyzed subordinates. The practical language classes will develop in students the skills to listen, understand and produce in Russian language oral and written texts of the different styles analyzed during the lecturers. The developed linguistic skills will correspond to the fourth level (B2) of the official standard established by the Council of Europe for the knowledge of foreign languages.

Teaching methods:
Lessons will be held in synchronous mode (videoconference), according to the timetable of the course, using the Microsoft Teams platform with the exception of some lessons in asynchronous mode (videolessons). The lessons in synchronous videoconferencing will be recorded and made available in the online course.
Any possible updates regarding the progress of the lessons will be communicated through notices published on Ariel platform.
Students are invited to register for the course through the EasyLesson app.

In addition to the bibliography already reported in the program, students should refer to the materials that will be used during the online lessons and that will be made available on Ariel platform.
Learning assessment procedures and assessment criteria:
The exam consists of a written and an oral part.
As indicated in the program, attending students will be allowed to do partial exams (to replace the general written one). For the rules relating to the access to partial exams and to their functioning please consider what is indicated in the program of the course.
The partial exams, the general written exam and the oral exam will take place in person or remotely (on Microsoft Teams) according to the indications that will be provided by the University on the way.
In the event that the written exam (even partial ones) will take place remotely, it could be converted into oral form. All information about this eventuality will be published on Ariel platform.
The evaluation criteria will remain those indicated in the program.

The course is entitled Linguistic Manipulation in Publicistic and Literary Texts and consists of the following three teaching units.
A. Linguistic manipulation in publicistic texts.
It will present how to construct linguistic manipulation from a phonetic, lexical, semantic, syntactical and stylistic point of view.
The linguistic peculiarities of the journalistic-publicistic style will be described with particular reference to the language of newspapers and social-media with respect to the processes of information manipulation. The various manipulative strategies within a corpus of texts will be identified and analysed.
B: The linguistic manipulation in the literary text in Russian.
Historical background and critical framework: Pragmalinguistics and the concept of demagogy/linguistic manipulation.
Identification and analysis of the various types of linguistic manipulation within a corpus of literary texts.
C: Linguistic manipulation in two specific literary genres: travel stories and children's literature.
The course provides 9 CFU. It is not possible to acquire only 6. For this reason students will stick to the full program.
The course program is valid until the end of July 2022.

Prerequisites for admission
The course, which is held entirely in Russian, the examination materials and bibliography presuppose an start level B1. In addition, the student must have the requirements for access to the LM C73 relating to the Russian language, as indicated in the Manifesto of Studies.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: frontal lessons; reading and analysis of literary and publicistic texts in relation to linguistic manipulation. In addition, the course is integrated with practical classes focused on the viewing and analysis of videos related to linguistic manipulation in the publicistic and literary field. For the practical classes students are invited to refer to the specific form.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The teacher will assess the ability to understand videos (literary and publicity videos) in Russian in which there are processes of manipulation of information, to summarize them in writing and to compose a text related to the topics covered in the videos, highlighting the manipulative processes and commenting on them. Linguistic correctness, lexical, stylistic and structural competence will be assessed.
Written + oral: The examination consists of a written and an oral test. The final grade will be given by the average of the two marks obtained (in the written and oral test) expressed in thirtieth. The examination grade can only be recorded when the students have passed both the written and the oral part of the examination.
The general written examination can be taken from the end of the course, i.e. from May 2021. The oral examination starts in June 2021.
Attending students (active participation in at least 75% of the practice sessions and at least 75% of the lessons) can have access to the partial tests (replacing only the general written test) which take place at the end of the first semester and at the end of the second semester. In this case, the final mark of the written examination is given by the average of the two partial tests of the first and second semester. In order to take the second partial, in addition to having attended at least 75% of the lessons and exercises of the second semester, it is essential to have passed the first partial. In the event of failing one of the two partial tests, students must take the entire general written examination during the official appeals (May, September, January).
The first partial examination will include the viewing of a Russian-language video related to the literary style and a video related to the publicistic style. After watching the videos twice each, students will have to write a summary of both in Russian. A minimum length of the summary is not required, but it should contain all the information presented in the videos. Bilingual and monolingual dictionaries may be used for the summary.
The second partial examination will include the viewing of a Russian-language video related to the literary style and a video related to the publicistic style. After having watched the videos twice each, students will be asked to write a text in Russian language in which they will be asked to present the moments in the two videos in which the manipulation of information takes place, to describe the manipulative processes applied and to express their opinion on the purpose of the manipulative act in the videos in question. The minimum length of the theme should be about 300 words. Bilingual and monolingual dictionaries may be used to develop the theme.
General Writing (for those who will not support the partials or who have not passed one of them)
The general written test will include:
- the viewing of a video in Russian language related to the literary style and a video related to the publicistic style. After watching the videos twice each, students will have to write a summary of both in Russian. A minimum length of the summary is not required, but it should contain all the information presented in the videos.
- the writing of a theme in Russian language in which students will be asked to present the moments in the two videos watched in which the manipulation of information is carried out, to describe the processes of manipulation applied and to express their opinion on the purpose of the manipulative act in the videos in question. The minimum length of the theme should be about 300.
Bilingual and monolingual dictionaries may be used to carry out the summary and the theme.
Oral:
The teacher will evaluate the correctness and fluency of expression in Russian language, the ability to present the contents of the course in a logical and complete way and to apply them in the analysis of original Russian texts.
The oral test will consist of:
- an interview on a subject assigned at the time of the examination (the subjects assigned will presuppose knowledge of the vocabulary covered during the practice lessons);
- a detailed exposition, in Russian, of at least 15 minutes of the results of the analysis of the information manipulation processes carried out autonomously by the student on the pages chosen for the autonomous work related to the literary style (the teacher may also ask to analyse one of the literary texts seen in the classroom),
- a detailed exposition, in Russian, of at least 10 minutes of the results of the analysis of the information manipulation processes carried out autonomously by the student on the pages and video-texts chosen for autonomous work in relation to the publicistic style (the teacher may also ask to analyse one of the publicistic texts seen in the classroom),
- answers to theoretical questions about the subject of the course (in Russian),
Language in which the student is required to take the exam: Russian.
