Learning objectives
The objective of the course is provide students an overview of sustainable development from an environmental, social and economic perspective. This module will firstly explore the main issues and challenges related to sustainable development, with particular reference to environmental themes. The main sustainable development indicators together with the main environmental assessment methodologies will be then presented. The social and economic aspects of sustainable development will be then studied, analysing also the role of international institutions.
Expected learning outcomes
The course provide students an overview of the main issues related to sustainable development, and in particular to those related to environmental, social and economic aspects. Students will first learn that environment and development are strictly related, and how sustainable development can be achieved without compromising the environment. Students will learn the connection between economic and sustainable development, looking in particular to the mechanisms highlighted by the Environmental Kuznet Curve. Students will also learn that sustainable development is increasingly focused on social aspects, which are essential to guarantee the improvement of health and institutional conditions and social equity. Students will learn what are the main indicator of sustainable development and to use them to evaluate the level of sustainable development in different countries. Students will also learn how international institutions can help especially developing to enhance a higher level of development through the implementation of sustainable projects.

In case the emergency situation will force the lessons to be held online, this course will be held through online synchronized lectures on Microsoft Teams. All the classes will be recorded, and then uploaded on the platform Ariel.
Course syllabus
The course has the objective to provide students an overview of sustainable development from an environmental, social and economic perspective. This module will firstly explore the main issues related to sustainable development. The course will then focus mainly on the environmental and economic aspects of sustainable development. The core part of the course will analyse the relationship between economic growth and sustainable development, looking in particular to the contribution of countries' resource endowment and international trade. The course will then consider the relationship between environment, food security and sustainable development. At the end of the course, there will be a specific focus on how climate change is threatening sustainable development.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of microeconomics and econometrics are requested. In particular, since part of the course will review empirical scientific papers, students should be able to interpret the results of basic econometric estimations.
Teaching methods
Frontal teaching. Lectures will be held either in person, or, if the emergency situation related to COVID 19 will continue, the lessons to be held through online synchronized lectures on the platform Microsoft Teams.

Assessment methods and Criteria
An oral exam will be scheduled at the end of the course. During the exam, students will also have the possibility to present a scientific paper in detail. The article will be assigned by the teacher, if requested by the students, some weeks before the exam. During the exam it will be evaluated the knowledge of the basic concepts discussed during the course, and the capacity of understanding the research questions and the basic econometric approaches used in the scientific articles discussed during the course.
