Learning objectives
The teaching workshop aims to introduce the students to the comparative study of the Metrical system in the Romance literatures and to provide them with a knowledge of the main instruments for the analysis of metre in texts written in the Romance languages. Exercises will allow students to use the theoretical skills they acquired.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will learn the methodology for the analysis of metre in Romance texts; they will learn how to understand the Romance languages' metrical systems; they will be able to analyse and understand metre in the texts.
Course syllabus and organization

Lesson period
Second semester
The first lecture of will be held on Microsoft Teams; the following lectures will be registered and uploaded on the Ariel 2.0 website for this course. For each lectures there will be exercises to do as homework; students will have to submit their homework three days before the following lecture on the Ariel 2.0 website.
Each week, a meeting of 30 minutes on Microsoft Teams will be held in order to discuss questions from the students; it will be possible to ask questions directly to the teacher, or to send them to the teacher by e-mail or through the Forum section of the Ariel 2.0 website.
The teacher will verify the student's attendance 1) by e-mail; 2) through the regular submission of their homework by the students; 3) by monitoring accesses to the Ariel 2.0 website.
Course syllabus
- The basics for the analysis of metre;
- Relationships between Romance and Latin metre;
- Comparative study of the Metrical systems in the Romance Literatures;
- Adaptation and traduction of metre and rime;
- Intertextuality and metre.
Prerequisites for admission
Teaching methods
A presentation of the main topics will be followed by exercises and presentations by the students.
Teaching Resources
Teaching materials, including power point presentations, literary texts and secondary literature will be made available to the students during the activity.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The teacher will verify the students' attendance and their participation to the exercises that will be carried out.
