Teaching Workshop: Archaeological Excavation/advanced Level in Selinunte (TP)
A.Y. 2020/2021
Learning objectives
The archaeological excavation of advanced level strengthens technical-professionalizing tools acquired in the archaeological excavation of basic level. The main goal of the laboratory is to enable students to find employment in archaeological excavation fields as skilled worker at the end of the training course.
Expected learning outcomes
The workshop teaches students how to produce graphic and photographic documentation of archaeological evidence and how to use optical and electronic equipment for topographical relief, such as total station and theodolite.

Course syllabus
The participation in the program requires a daily attendance, Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 6:00pm, for the entire duration of the project. Work for the project consists in days devoted to the excavation in the main urban sanctuary and in days devoted to lab work in the storerooms at the Baglio Florio. Excavation work includes the cleaning and stratigraphic excavation in the trench, the sifting of the entire excavation deposit, and the identification, selection, and division of all the artifacts and organic remains. Work in the field may also include participation in the digital documentation of the stratigraphy and structures being investigated. Work in the lab consists in the cleaning of the finds from the excavation, their division according to classes of materials, and their analysis, under the guidance of specialists. Work in the lab may also involve collaboration with conservators and archaeozoologists.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no particular prerequisites for admission. However, given the advanced character of the research project, in reviewing the applications precedence will be given to students who already have some experience in archaeological excavation.
Teaching methods
The excavation includes lessons both in the field and the lab.
Teaching Resources
In order to familiarize yourself with the project, we recommend consulting the section on the Selinunte excavations in the Academia.edu site of Prof. Clemente Marconi at https://nyu.academia.edu/ClementeMarconi.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The instructor verifies that the student has followed and carried out all the activities. As mentioned above, participation in the program requires a daily attendance, Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 6:00pm, for the entire duration of the project.
