Teaching Workshop: Film Critic and Film Analysis

Learning objectives
Obiettivo del laboratorio è fornire agli studenti modelli di critica cinematografica, permettendo lo sviluppo di una propria "voce". Si metteranno a fuoco le differenze specifiche fra la critica svolta su riviste specializzate, su settimanali e quotidiani, su siti internet e blog cinematografici. Attraverso esercizi di analisi, lo studente sarà accompagnato in un percorso di formazione del gusto, mirato soprattutto a cogliere il ruolo dello stile e della visualità nel film. Il laboratorio ospiterà critici di fama, alcuni impegnati nel modo giornalistico e altri nei festival, acquisita la loro disponibilità a un dialogo con gli studenti.
Expected learning outcomes
The workshop aims to develop the following skills:
Critical thinking skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will display a sufficiently independent critical approach in selecting and interpreting the notions that are most relevant their area of study and to the broader socio-cultural context in which they operate
Communication skills:
By the end of the workshop:
- students will be able to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge and disseminate it to the general public;
- student will have developed basic IT skills concerning knowledge preservation and transfer.
Learning skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will have developed the learning skills required to continue their studies in keeping with their own research interests. In order to meet this objective, students will also develop relevant skills in the independent interpretation of sources and in the use of basic IT tool for bibliographic research.

The workshop will consist in 5 lessons (4 hours each); 3 lessons will be held in the presence and 2 lessons online, following the official class schedule (in the presence: 09/10, 23/10, 06/11 from 8.30 to 12.30; online: 16/10, 30/10 from 8.30 to 12.30). Lessons will be held in sync mode but will always be recorded so that class will be accessible in async mode too, again in Teams.

The exam will still be oral, but when required by the regulations for distancing, it will be held in Teams. The evaluation criteria won't change.

Prerequisites for admission
No binding prerequisites, although basic information about cinema and visuality is taken for granted.
Teaching methods
During classes: introductory lessons, readings, watching, training in film analysis and interpretation; at home: watching movies and own writing (composing articles to be discussed during classes).

Assessment methods and Criteria
The workshop does not include a final exam but the approved / unapproved assessment (3 credits) based on: attendance (mandatory) and participation, evaluation of the required writings, working in group. Evaluation criteria:
- autonomy of judgment
- ability in expressive writing (sharpness in the analysis and communicative style)
- autonomy in the use of the sources and basic bibliographical and IT tools for research and scientific updating
The Ariel site of the workshop (https://bgrespilccaf.ariel.ctu.unimi.it/v5/home/Default.aspx) will be used for the delivery and evaluation of students' writings.
