Learning objectives
The course is aimed at further developing the knowledge of Chinese contemporary written and oral language, through the analysis and translation of selected texts and through grammar exercises. Newspaper article readings also aim at helping students further familiarize with the journalistic language and improve their knowledge of the political language.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will have developed the following skills:
reading and understanding Chinese newspaper articles;
translating newspaper articles from Chinese to Italian;
language skills required to pass HSK 4 exams.

Due to the difficulties we are facing, the program will temporarily be subjected to changes as the course will partially will develop online:
Teaching methods:
Lessons will mainly be held in videoconference using Teams, with the exception of some asynchronous lessons (videolessons). All materials use in lessons will be made available on Ariel.
The didactic activities also include working in teams. Students who will not participate in the group work will have to do a longer test at the exam.
The schedule of the lessons and all the details of the activities will be published on Ariel at the beginning of the semester. Any updates will be communicated on the platform.
Reference materials:
In addition to the bibliography reported in the program, reference should be made to all the lessons, materials and resources published on Ariel.
Learning assessment procedures and assessment criteria:
The exam is written and oral. The student must pass a written test in preparation for the oral exam. For those regularly attending the course and participating to the group work the written exam will be shorter.
Participation in group work and related production is also part of the evaluation. Students who will not participate in the group work will have to do a longer test at the exam.
The oral exam takes place on Teams, according to the indications provided by the University. Any communication on deadlines and organisation of the tests will be published on Ariel.
The oral exam is the same for both attended and non-attended students, with the only difference that the oral conversation for non-attended students will consist of a greater number of questions.
Chinese students who did not completed their BA in Italy take a written test and an oral exam on specific contents indicated in the program.

The corse focuses on the development of reading, syntactic analysis and comprehension skills on texts or articles in Chinese language, at an intermediate level. The texts will address various (socio-economic-legal) topics.
The texts' analysis will be accompanied by grammar and conversation exercises.
The 60 hours of lessons will be associated with 60 hours of supplementary language exercises.

Prerequisites for admission
Students should be able to read and translate Chinese texts, to express themselves through articulated conversations and to translate sentences from Italian to Chinese. The course require kowledge and abilities equivalent to an HSK3 (B1) level.
Teaching methods
Lectures will be designed to train students' critical abilities and their communicative skills.
The annual course which includes teaching and exercises with a mother tongue teacher is accompanied in the first semester by a module of review exercises.
News and updates on events, teaching activities and materials will be available on the ARIEL web portal.
Seminars and conferences by distinguished guests from the Chinese cultural scene will be offered in order to strengthen the students skills and knowledge. Participation in activities and events is considered an integral part of the course.

The final grade is given by 50% written test and 50% oral examination.
The written test for Italian and Chinese students who have obtained a BA in Italy includes:
- solution of exercises, similar to those present in the adopted textbooks;
- solution of exercises, structured on the HSK4 exam model but focused on the contents of the adopted textbooks.
The oral discussion for Italian students and for Chinese students who have obtained a BA in Italy will be divided into two parts:
- during the first part, with the Chinese native speaker teacher, the candidate will be asked to read from the adopted textbooks, to explain some words, to answer the teacher's questions and to hold a short conversation on selected topics already discussed in class;
- in the second part, with the Italian teacher, the candidate will be asked analyze the syntactic structure of some passages from the adopted textbooks and explain some grammatical characteristics present within the text.
The written test for Chinese students who have not obtained a BA in Italy includes:
- translation from Chinese to Italian of a passage taken from textbooks;
- translation from Italian to Chinese of part of a newspaper article.
