Learning objectives
The course aims to offer an introductory, albeit comprehensive, picture of the main environmental, economic, social and economic policy (either mitigation or adaptation) issues related to climate change. The course will also discuss the challenges that climate change and its impacts pose to the economic assessment and the methodologies economics uses for their evaluation. The course will finally present the start and evolution of international negotiation process on climate change.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be acquainted with the concept of climate change as an "economic" and development issue. They will be familiar with the challenges to implementation, cost-benefit-effectiveness evaluation, pros and cons of different strategies against climate change. They will be also updated on the exit of major international climate change agreements.
Applying this knowledge, students will be able to: autonomously judge the appropriateness of mitigation and adaptation policies proposed domestically and internationally, with respect to the achievement of temperature increase stabilization targets; critically follow the evolution of UN climate change negotiation process; orient themselves and scrutiny the vast social economic literature on climate change periodically surveyed by the IPCC.

Course syllabus
Climate change as an economic problem. The challenges to the economic assessmen of climate change (uncertanty, horizontal equity, vertical equity). Economic methods for the assessement of climate change impacts and policies (Integrated Assessment models). Impacts and costs of climate change. Mitigation and adaptation policies, effectiveness and efficiency. Introduction to climate change international negotiation prcesses.
Prerequisites for admission
The learning process of the course is facilitated by a basic knowledge of economics and economics of the environment
Teaching methods
Front lectures with demonstration exercises developed by the professor.

Selected chapters from the 5th Assessment report from the IPCC (2014) and from the Special report on 1.5° C from the IPCC (2018). All are available fro free download on the IPCC website.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists either in a written exam or in the elaboration of a short group research essay. The essay topic will be assigned by the professor, the resuls will be presented by each group to the whole class.
The written exam consists in 2 open questions. The essay contributes with a maximum of 4 points to the written exam marks.
