Learning objectives
- Acquire and apply the principles and methodologies of epidemiology and prevention.
- Understand the natural history and determinants of communicable and non-communicable diseases to identify the most appropriate prevention strategies.
- Know the epidemiology and prevention of diseases with a significant impact on Public Health.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student should know the demographic/health data and health indicators. The student should also be able to know and apply the epidemiological and preventive methodologies.

Course syllabus and organization

Lesson period
Second semester
Lessons will take place remotely, in synchronous mode, as scheduled for the current semester. The Microsoft Teams platform will be used for lessons and the videos will be available on the Ariel dedicated website, together with all presentations (.pdf).
Exams (written and oral parts) will take place remotely, using Exam.net and Microsoft Teams.
Course syllabus
- Health and disease: health and health determinants; causes and risk factors; natural history of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- Epidemiology: Principles of epidemiology, epidemiological methodology: descriptive, analytical and experimental studies. Epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases. The study of outbreaks.
- Prevention: Principles of prevention. Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention: objectives and strategies. Prevention of communicable diseases (notification and surveillance, isolation, diagnostic assessment, disinfection and sterilization, vaccines and vaccination strategies). Prevention of non-communicable diseases (screening).
- Epidemiology and prevention of major vaccine-preventable diseases; epidemiology and prevention of major airborne, fecal-oral, sexual, and foodborne infectious diseases
- Lifestyle and disease: tobacco smoke, alcohol abuse.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge provided by the biological disciplines covered in the three-year degree courses, in particular in the microbiological, immunological and statistical fields.
Teaching methods
The program will be carried out through lectures (6 credits) with the aid of didactic material (slide and/or video projections). Students will be actively involved in the discussion of the topics covered to improve their critical and expression skills.
All teaching materials will be available on the Ariel platform on the dedicated website.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The examination consists of:
1. a written test on the contents of the course. The test consists of multiple choice questions (one correct answers) with a time available of 45 minutes. The test is passed with at least 60% correct answers.
2. a critical discussion on the topics covered in the written test, aimed at an in-depth assessment of the knowledge acquired.
The final examination mark is expressed in thirtieths.
There are no intermediate tests.
