Film History and Criticism

Learning objectives
The purpose of the course is to introduce the main aspects of the history of cinema: 1) the early cinema; 2) Affirmation of the Mode of Institutional Representation (with the study of the Griffith's case); 3) The golden season of Italian silent cinema; 4) The avant-garde, German expressionism, impressionism French, the Soviet assembly school; 5) The advent of sound and classical American cinema; 6) Italian neorealism; 7) La Nouvelle Vague; 8) Auteur cinema; 9) New Hollywood. A methodological and thematic study will be proposed. The teaching is fully consistent with the objectives of the Course of Studies, which aims to ensure the acquisition of solid knowledge in the fields of multimedia communication by anchoring them to a strengthening of the humanistic training of students.
Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to lead students to acquire the technical-sector lexicon of the discipline. Students will also be able to learn about the main intersections of the history of cinema and some of the most important historiographical problems of modern debate. By the end of the course the student will be able to view a film with a critical attitude, place it historically on the basis of the main stylistic-formal aspects and connect it to its historical and cultural context.
