Students will be able to understand the complex morphofunctional organization of insects and its adaptations according to the conditions of environment or ecological niches. Furthermore, they will acquire skills useful for the classification of insects

The course is held in the first semester. In compliance with the regulations, the lessons would take place in person or remotely (on Teams platform). The course, after a brief introduction on the main morphofunctional characteristics of insects, will deal in detail with the following topics:
- general characteristics of the external morphology of insects, structure and function of the cuticle
- The head and the characteristics of the mouthparts
- The sense organs of the head
- External morphology of the thorax and abdomen
- Organization of the nervous system
- The tracheal system
- The digestive system
- The excretory system
- The circulatory system and the immune system
- Reproduction
- Post embryonic development
- Introduction to systematics: main characteristics of the different insect orders
- general characteristics of the external morphology of insects, structure and function of the cuticle
- The head and the characteristics of the mouthparts

Assessment methods and Criteria
The students have to pass an oral exam. The final evaluation will take into account the student's language property, the level of knowledge and understanding of the main aspects of the insect anatomy and physiology, and the ability to understand and recognize the main characteristics of the different orders of insects.
