Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic preparation on the philological method necessary for the study of the transmission of texts in the vernacular.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge
The fundamental concepts of the Lachmannian method.
The different types of errors (indicative errors, contamination, diffraction).
The different types of editions (diplomatic, interpretative, critical).
The forms of the critical apparatus (negative or positive).

Skills.
Addressing and managing the problems of Lachmannian philology and the author's philology.
Reading a critical edition with apparatus.

Single session

Lesson period
Second semester
The lessons will be in the presence.
Any change will be announced through Ariel.
Course syllabus
Part A: Introduction to Italian Philology. The transmission of the texts by copy.
Part B: Introduction to Italian Philology. The "author's Philology".
Part C: The critical edition of a text. Work tools and editorial aspects.
Prerequisites for admission
No prerequisites for admission.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons. Other working materials will be available on Ariel website. Attendance mandatory.

Non-attending students have the same program as attending students, but are requested to contact the teacher for the mandatory bibliographic additions.

International or Erasmus incoming students are kindly requested to contact the teacher. Also, students with disabilities should contact the teacher of the course in order to discuss alternative examination methods, in agreement with the competent Office.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral exam will evaluate, in the usual scale of 30, the ability to organize the speech, to critically present the subject treated, the specific knowledge on the philological method, and the terminological competence in the use of specific vocabulary.
