Planning and Control in Healthcare Companies

Learning objectives
The course will teach students planning and control principles, processes and approaches applied to healthcare companies.
We will focus on the analysis and rundown of financial and organizational aspects underpinning executive decision-making processes as well as management by objectives in corporate budgeting.

Expected learning outcomes
The course will provide students with planning and control skills for the healthcare sector, with a focus on the tools and approaches used in the industry. More specifically, at the end of the course students will have learned:
· Planning and control notions, approaches and tools for the healthcare sector. They will understand the similarities and differences between public and private healthcare companies, as well as with health sector businesses;
· Notions and tools for understanding health sector regulations;
· How to produce budget and performance reports;
· How to create a budget sheet: identifying and outlining indicators and targets, analysing, interpreting and reading indicators;
· How to determine and analyse costs, and use cost information in typical business decisions;
· Critical skills for assessing the results of the budget process.
Moreover, students will hone critical judgement, self-learning and communication skills through case studies, classroom discussion, individual and group presentations.

Expected learning outcomes will be assessed through:
· Written exam with multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions (grade on a scale of 30) - 70%
· Group work (grade on a scale of 30) - 30%
The final grade (on a scale of 30) will be the weighted average of the written-exam and group-work grades. Additional grade points may be awarded for the student's participation in the classroom and individual work.
The written exam will be graded in terms of content, clarity of argument, critical analysis and reworking.
Non-attending students
