Learning objectives
The course is aimed at third-year BA students of the degree course in Foreign Languages and Literature. It is divided into theoretical lessons, held by the course lecturer and aimed at providing students with the notions of Russian language and linguistics, and practical language classes, held by linguistic collaborators and aimed at acquiring practical skills in the Russian language. Year-long, the course supposes the acquisition of written and oral communication skills, with the related syntactic, morphological and lexical knowledge, corresponding to the third level (B1) of the official standard established by the Council of Europe for knowledge of foreign languages.
Expected learning outcomes
The knowledge that the course intends to offer mainly concerns the syntax of the Russian sentence: the student must be able to recognize at first sight the structure of any sentence, analyze and explain the functioning of the morphological categories therein. In particular, students will be provided with the concepts necessary for the analysis of the communicative structure of the statement and highlighted the main mechanisms for the expression of the communicative structure in Russian: the information structure and intonative constructions, the relationship between the communicative structure, the syntactic one and the word order. The knowledge of the structure of the actants of the verb and of the correspondence between the semantic roles, the syntactic ones and the morphological cases will be deepened. Then the complex sentence will be addressed: the criteria and types of subordination will be exposed, and the most frequent models in written and spoken Russian (constructions) will be analyzed. Furthermore, the tools of textual cohesion in the written and spoken Russian text will be analyzed: the discursive words, the collocations, the typical syntactic strategies adopted in Russian texts. Finally, a part of the course will be dedicated to the consolidation of translation skills, especially where there is no correspondence between Russian and Italian syntactic structures, and therefore to the practice of translation from Italian into Russian.

Course syllabus
Teaching unit A. In teaching unit A the course will focus on aspects such as words order and intonation types, necessary for the analysis of the communicative structure of the sentence. The syntax of simple sentence will be introduced and circumstantial complements will be addressed.
Teaching unit B. Initially, teaching unit B will be dedicated to the study of impersonal sentences and direct and indirect speech. Then the syntax of complex sentence will be addressed and the relations of coordination and subordination inside it will be studied in depth.
Teaching unit C. Teaching unit C will present the main tools of textual cohesion in written and spoken Russian texts (discursive words, collocations). Then part of the unit will be dedicated to the morphosyntactic and lexical analysis of Russian texts, focusing in them on the functioning of the structures studied in the different modules.

The course program is valid until September 2023.
The course provides 9 CFUs, it is not possible to acquire only 6 CFUs. For this reason students will refer to the full program.

Prerequisites for admission
The course is partially held in Russian, the materials and the exam bibliography presuppose an initial level A2 competence.
To take the exam students must have passed both the Russian Language 2 exam (written and oral) and the Russian Literature 2 exam.

The course adopts the following teaching methods: frontal lessons, communication tasks, understanding and commenting on the video material, exercises. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the separate form.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written and an oral parts. The final mark will be given by the average of the two obtained marks (in the written and oral tests) expressed in thirtieths. The exam grade will be recorded only when the students have passed both parts, the written one and the oral one.
The written exam can be taken starting from the end of the course, therefore from May 2022. The oral exam from June 2022.
Students attending the lessons (active participation in at least 75% of practical classes and lessons) can have access to partial tests (replacing only the general written test), which take place at the end of the first semester and at the end of the second semester. In this case, the final grade of the written exam is given by the average of the two partial tests of the first and second semester. To access the second partial test, in addition to having attended at least 75% of lessons and practical classes in the second semester, it is essential to have passed the first partial test. In case of failure of one of the two partial tests, students will have to take the entire general written exam during the official exams (May, September, January).
The first partial test will include:
- Reading of a text and answer to closed and opened questions, related to the text.
- Grammar exercises on the topics addressed in classes during the first semester.
- Translation of sentences from Italian into Russian (without dictionary) containing grammatical topics addressed during practical classes in the first semester.
The second partial test will include:
- Grammar exercises on the topics addressed in the lecturers and in practical classes during the second semester.
- Translation from Italian into Russian of a text (with bilingual dictionary).
- Watching of a video and writing a composition (minimun 250 words without dictionary) on a theme related to the topic addressed in the video. Video will be related to themes addressed during the practical classes.
General written exam (for students who will no held partial exams, or do not pass one of them)
The general written test will include:
- Reading of a text and answer to closed and opened questions, related to the text.
- Grammatical exercises on the topics covered during the course and the practical classes.
- Translation of sentences from Italian into Russian (without dictionary).
- Translation of a text from Italian into Russian (with bilingual dictionary).
- Whatchin of a video and writing a composition (minimun 250 words without dictionary) on a theme related to the topic addressed in the video. Video will be related to themes addressed during the practical classes.
Oral
The oral exam will consist of an interview on the program topics, aimed at verifying the student's theoretical and practical linguistic skills. Cocretely students will be required to:
· converse / dialogue in Russian on a topic assigned directly at the time of the exam (conversation will require the knowledge of lexicon studied in practical classes),
· analyze in Russian, from syntactic point of view the texts that will be proposed during lecturers and the 80 pages that will be chosen by the student for the self-work. Students will have to demonstrate that they are also able to expose the content of the studied pages in Russian and to translate the pages in Italian.
· Answer, in Russian, questions of grammatical theory relating to the topics covered during the lecturers.
Language in which the student is required to take the exam: Russian.
