Learning objectives
This course aims at proposing an approach to the Russian Literature programme, that is chronologically organised, and as such it is reserved for first-year students. During the course an introduction to the Russian Literature and Culture from the 18th Century to the first half of the 19th Century, with a specific focus on the development of the novel, will be presented.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: outline of the history of Russian Literature from 18th to half 19th Century; main authors and literary movements of the period; evolution of the novel between 18th and 19th Century.

The course will be held during the second semester 21/22. In case the Covid emergency phase will continue, further information will be provided on ARIEL.
Course syllabus
The course is titled: "At the Origins of the Russian Novel, Eugene Onegin by Pushkin, A Hero of Our Time by Lermontov, Dead Souls by Gogol'". The course is divided in 3 parts
Part A: An Introduction to the 18th and 19th Century Russian Literature
Part B: Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, an analysis.
Part C: Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time and Gogol's Dead Souls.
The course provides 9CFU.
In the first part of the course an overview of the Russian Literary evolution from 18th to the first half of 19th Century will be presented.
In the second part of the course the structure and the stylistic and thematic features of the novel in verse Eugene Onegin by Pushkin will be analyzed.
The final part of the course will be focused on Gogol's Dead Souls and Lermontov's A Hero of our Time.
The course syllabus is valid until September 2023.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The test will be based on an oral exam in Italian. The exam aims at evaluating the skills of the student in presenting a) the main methodological approaches of the course; b) the main figures, works and problems of the history of the Russian Literature between 18th and first half of 19th Century; c) a critical interpretation of the literary texts by Pushkin, Lermontov and Gogol analyzed during the course. The final marks will be max 30 points.
