Learning objectives
Introduction to the fundamental concepts of Supramolecular Chemistry, intermolecular interactions and methodologies that take advantage from molecular recognition. The student will be aware of the different fields of application of supramolecular architectures.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will understand the importance and action of intermolecular interactions in the bottom-up assembly processes of different supramolecular systems. They will use the learned concepts the student will be able to analyze and design a supramolecular structure and understand the specific literature.
Single course

This course cannot be attended as a single course. Please check our list of single courses to find the ones available for enrolment.

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Responsible
The lessons will be given online in a mixed asynchronous (ppt audio) and synchronous mode (zoom). All recordings of the lessons will be made available to the student for the duration of the semester through the Ariel website of the course. Online student meeting will be also periodically organized. The final exam will be oral.
Course syllabus
Basic concepts. Weak Interactions and structural aspects of the host-guest interaction. Molecular recognition and molecular receptors. Organic macrocycles: synthesis and applications. Complexation of cations, anions and neutral molecules in solution.
Methods for the determination of stoichiometry and association constants of complexes.
Self-assembly and crystal engineering.
Coordination supramolecular architectures: polygons, cages and molecular polyhedra.
Inorganic and organic clathrate compounds.
Coordination networks: syntheses, structures and topological classification. Porous coordination networks (Metal-Organic-Frameworks): characterization of their host-guest behavior and applications in the fields of catalysis and gas storage.
Prerequisites for admission
Preliminary knowledge to the course are those learned in the basic courses of general, inorganic and organic chemistry.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons whose attendance is strongly recommended.
