Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the linguistic knowledge necessary for full understanding of Greek literature. Specific attention is devoted to literary dialects in their historical development, within the genres in which they are used.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: at the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired the technical knowledge adequate for the study of Greek at university level. In particular they are expected to have acquired adequate familiarity with linguistic aspects and with the stylistic code of the texts proposed.

Skills: at the end of the course the students must demonstrate that they:
- are able to motivate and discuss the Italian translation of the Greek text with a conscious and non-mechanical or mnemonic approach;
- are autonomously able to place a text within the genre to which it belongs and in relation to other literary genres;
- are able to use appropriately the bibliographic tools

Between Judicial and Epictic Oratory: The Judicial Speeches of Isocrates
Part A (20 h, 3 cfu): Reading and commentary on the orations De bigis, Trapeziticus, In Callimachum
Part B (20 h, 3 cfu): Reading and commentary on the orations Aegineticus, Contra Lochitem, In Euthinoum

The course aims to offer students a detailed analysis of Isocrates' judicial prose, through reading the linguistic, stylistic and thematic commentary of the texts. The teaching method focuses on direct confrontation with the texts, accompanied by a bibliographical and critical framework.
The Greek Grammar course is intended for students on the three-year Humanities degree course, in particular those in the Classical curriculum who wish to study Greek in greater depth.

Non-attending students must agree on the programme (which consists of additional readings and critical essays) with the Professor.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of the ancient Greek language is required. Before attending the course, absolute beginners are invited to take the preparatory classes organised by the Degree Course.
Teaching methods
The lectures are intended to provide students with a solid method in textual analysis, translation, and literary exegesis starting from the linguistic, stylistic and rhetoric aspects of the texts, consolidating and reinforcing the students' knowledge.
Texts, iconographic materials and documentation will be available on the Ariel platform.
In agreement with the students, alternative forms of teaching can be experimented.
Course attendance is strongly recommended.

1. The critical text of the Isocratean speeches together with the necessary bibliographical indications will be provided in class by the Professor. The necessary materials will be uploaded to the course's Ariel site.

3. Lecture notes.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral exam aims to verify the language skills of the student, and in particular his/her ability to translate, comment on and contextualize the texts in the original language, starting from the ones presented in class or proposed for individual preparation. The student must demonstrate a complete knowledge of grammatical and syntactic rules; furthermore, she/he must show a translation technique appropriate to the university level.
Marks will be out of 30.
