Learning objectives
The course intends to foster the comprehension of the contemporary world, through the study of his historical roots beginning from the Nineteenth century to present times.
Expected learning outcomes
After the course, students must have a firm knowledge of the main subjects of Contemporary history, from 1848 to the present.

- SYNCHRONOUS EDUCATIONAL METHODS will be adopted: synchronous lessons on Microsoft Teams
- ASYNCHRONOUS DIDACTIC METHODS will be adopted as well: video and / or audio asynchronous lessons or with other materials (essays, images, diagrams), uploaded on Ariel or on Microsoft Teams.
The program and the reference material will not change.
Course syllabus
Terrorism in the Western World: War necessity or criminal act? From Countries Liberation to September 11th.
- Unit 1:
The first unit will deal terrorism in XX Century Europe in connection with Decolonization and Dictatorship (France, Great Britain, Spain).
- Unit 2:
The second unit will deal terrorism in Europe relating to certain countries national troubles and groups (Germany and Italy).
- Unit 3:
The third unit will explore the actions of Palestinian groups abroad and terrorism in the United States.
Prerequisites for admission
The Students must have a good knowledge of the main events of contemporary history, from mid-1800s to the present times, which can be acquired through the study of Sabbatucci-Vidotto, Il mondo contemporaneo.
Teaching methods
During the lessons, the professor will outline the main events concerning terrorism in the Western world, starting from the second half of the XX Century..
Through the vision of historical films, the course also aims to provide tools for the use of cinema as source for the study of history

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam is of an oral test aimed at ascertaining the students' knowledge of world history from the mid-1800s to the present times. It will be evaluated also the students' ability to analyse and summarize the books and films in the program.
