Farm Structures and the Environment
A.Y. 2022/2023
Learning objectives
The course offers graduates the knowledge to follow the design path of rural buildings for their integration into the agroforestry area, providing adequate analysis tools. Considering both the functional needs deriving from the production organization of the company, and the consequences of the planning choices on the management of the company, the territorial and environmental impact of agricultural activities will be examined. The course provides the knowledge and methodologies for the correct sizing of the functional spaces of the livestock buildings, with hints to the other production buildings, taking into account the production and territorial system in which the building is inserted.
Expected learning outcomes
The student acquires the knowledge related to the design criteria of rural buildings in relation to the territorial and environmental impact and the welfare of animals. He will be able to apply his knowledge to concrete cases by preparing a project of a rural building (definition of the dimensions and division of spaces, thermal balance, evaluation of the heating, ventilation, cooling system). In addition, it will use the knowledge acquired for a critical evaluation of the project and for the insertion of the building in the territorial context in which it is located.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The assessment of knowledge is divided into:
- a written test consisting in the design of a rural building based on the definition of functional needs and its location in the territory based on the constraints provided. The test will last two hours.
- an oral test of critical discussion of the written test to evaluate the proposed solutions.
During the oral exam, knowledge about the needs of animals, the characteristics of the structures and equipment, the tools for inserting the building into the territory will be verified.
The application exercises required in the written test will be of the same type as those carried out during the exercises and reported on the ARIEL website.
The vote will be expressed out of thirty. The written test will provide a grade that must be positive to access the oral test. The final grade will be based on the average of the written test of the oral one, if positive.
The verification method remains the same for non-attending students.
SLD students: in order to take advantage of the facilities provided, it is necessary to have communicated their situation to the UniMI Disabled and SLD Service https://www.unimi.it/en/ugov/ou-structure/cosp-disability-and-sld-services).
