Course syllabus
The course aims to retrace some itineraries of feminism in France in the 20th and 21st centuries from the perspective of its cultural declinations, in particular literature and cinema. The aim of the course is to question the reception of feminist discourse, critically analysing the different ways in which feminism has been conveyed and represented, and highlighting the controversies and challenges arising from the encounter between art and politics. The first part of the course will focus on the relationship between feminism and literature, through the analysis of authors emblematic of the literary battle of women, from Simone de Beauvoir to Violette Leduc, up to contemporary authors such as Annie Ernaux and Virginie Despentes. The second part will focus instead on the transposition of feminist discourse into images, showing how not only the cinema of Agnès Varda and Chantal Akerman is a vehicle for a political message, but also how feminist engagement becomes a privileged instrument of aesthetic and artistic research.
Prerequisites for admission
A general knowledge of the main historical and cultural events in 20th century France as well as knowledge of the French language is required

The course will be conducted through lessons in which the exposition of topics will be accompanied by the analysis of textual and multimedia documents.
