Learning objectives
The Geographic Information Systems course aims to provide students with methodologies and tools useful for collection, storage, management, analysis and representation of spatially geo-referenced data. The course will address, by different degrees of detail, the main issues related to the GIS, starting from the analysis of the main data models up to their correct and precise representation, passing through the concepts of topology, database, data analysis, etc.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will gain skills and competences in georeferenced environmental data storage, query, management, analysis and visualization GIS-based concepts and techniques.

1. Introduction: fields of application, why use a GIS, purpose (Decision Support Systems)
2. Cartography: scale of representation; projection and coordinate reference systems; differences between traditional and digital cartographic approaches.
3. Data components: geographical component; geometric component (raster - vector); descriptive component (tabular); relational component (topology); temporal component.
4. Databases: records, fields, key-fields; normalization theory; Join and Relate operations; queries (mathematical, conditional and logical operators).

Prerequisites for admission
No prerequisites are required.
Teaching methods
Mode of delivery: Traditional through lectures and computer exercises using GIS software. Attendance: strongly recommended. Examination: two written tests (theory and practice).
Teaching Resources
Lesson slides, exercise texts, databases and GIS software are available on ARIEL website (https://ariel.unimi.it/) and at the Biology Dept. computing room. Students must register in advance in the computing room to obtain their personal login and password.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The criteria applied to check the level of learning and to assess the exam will concern:
- the student's ability to organize the theoretical knowledge acquired;
- the student's ability to logically model a problem and solve it practically through the use of ArcGIS software.
Learning verification and evaluation criteria
The learning verification and evaluation criteria will not change due to persisting Covid-19 emergency.
The exam will last 3 hours and will consist of two written tests: the first (1h, 30') aimed at verifying the learning of the theoretical part; the second (1h 30') aimed at assessing the practical skills acquired in the use of ArcGIS software (in a computer room). If necessary, several examination rounds (within the same examination call) will be organized over several consecutive days in order to allow the sanification of the computer room.
Both tests will be considered passed if a pass mark (18/30) is obtained. The final mark will be expressed in thirtieths and will be the mathematical average of the marks obtained in the two tests described above. The exam grade will be expressed in thirtieth.
Rejection of the grade or failure to pass the exam do not prevent the student from registering for the next exam session.
There are no intermediate examinations.
There are no special materials request to take the exam in addition to those provided/noted during the course..
The results of the test will be communicated through the Examination Verbalization web service on the UNIMI intranet site.
The exam will:
- ascertain the achievement of the objectives in terms of theoretical knowledge;
- verify the practical ability to apply the knowledge acquired through a three-hour exercise, carried out entirely in the computer room, using the ArcGIS software.
Additional information, if needed, on how to conduct the exam and the assessment criteria will be explained during the course.
