Learning objectives
The course is aimed at both beginner and advanced students. For beginner students the goal is to achieve the A2 level of the German language. For advanced students, the goal is the consolidation of previous language skills. The aim of the course for all participants is the acquisition of basic skills in the analysis of short texts related to various themes and the political and economic sector (e.g. political system, economy, innovation).
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student must be able to:
1. Actively use grammatical knowledge (e.g. conjugation of verbs, declension of adjectives) in the resolution of written exercises (e.g. MCQ, completion questions).
2. Answer closed questions in writing (e.g. MCQ, true or false) and open on texts covered in class (content, meaning of terms, grammar).
3. Answer orally short open questions about the texts covered in class (content, meaning of terms, grammar).
4. Propose a translation of the texts covered in class.
5. Independently understand German texts similar to those analyzed in class.
6. Answer closed questions in writing (e.g. MCQ, true or false) and open on texts not covered in class (content, meaning of terms, grammar).
7. Answer orally short open questions about texts not covered in class (content, meaning of terms, grammar).
8. Produce short texts written in German.
9. Answer oral questions on non-specialist topics (presenting yourself, describing your course of study, etc.).

The programme is the same for attending and non-attending students.
Updates and information will be published on the Ariel and on the Moodle platform. Students are strongly advised to check Ariel and LabOnline regularly so as to be up to date will all information and instructions.

A. 20 hours (Caterina Saracco)

- Grammar: nouns, pronouns (personal, interrogative); numbers; verbs (Präsens); negative forms; prepositions (locative and temporal).
-Introduction to pronunciation and oral interaction in German.

B. 40 hours (Valentina CRESTANI)

- Analysis of Germans texts: the analysis is aimed at content, at vocabulary and at grammatical elements.
- Grammar: adjective inflection; verbs (Perfekt, Präteritum; modal verbs); conjunctions and sentence structure (weil, dass, damit); infinitive constructions (e.g. um ...zu); pronouns (relative).

Prerequisites for admission
Italian: B1
Excellent knowledge of Italian grammatical terminology (e.g. articolo, nome, aggettivo, tempi del verbo, soggetto, frasi principali, frasi secondarie).

Assessment methods and Criteria
Assessment method:
intermediate written (computer-based) test or written (computer-based) exam during official exam sessions.

Intermediate written (computer-based) test: it takes place at the end of the 60 hours. Types of questions: exercises similar to those carried out in class and in self-study (e.g. insertion of endings, insertion of articles, cloze tests, writing of short texts, open-ended questions on the texts dealt with in class). Indicative duration of the intermediate tests: 60 minutes. Those who pass the intermediate test do not have to take the written exam during the official exam sessions.

Written (or computer-based) exam: this takes place during the official exam sessions. Types of questions: exercises similar to those carried out in class and in self-study (e.g. insertion of endings, insertion of articles, cloze test, writing of short texts, open-ended questions on the texts dealt with in class). Duration of the written exam: 60 minutes.

Assessment criteria: ability to use grammatical structures; vocabulary knowledge; ability to produce correct and communicatively relevant sentences and texts.
