Learning objectives
This course aims to provide students who have already passed the "Italian Culture for Foreign Students 1" exam with a more thorough knowledge of the cultural developments in 20-21th century Italy.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Italian cultural developments and of the literary texts included in the syllabus.

Course syllabus
Course title: "I want to go to America". The Italian diaspora.
The course is divided into two teaching Units. Unit I analyzes the history and characteristics of Italian emigration from the Unification to the present. Unit II examines two novels in which the theme of Italian emigration to the Americas is addressed: Sull'Oceano, by Edmondo De Amicis (1889), and Vita, by Melania Mazzucco (2003).
Prerequisites for admission
Students must have an excellent knowledge of the Italian language (expected level B2 / C1) and a good awareness of the main characteristics of Italian history and culture.

Frontal lessons. Combination of historiographical, sociological and literary investigation.

Non attending students are also required to study the following book: Gian Antonio Stella, L'orda, Rizzoli, Milano.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an oral interview on the topics of the program, aimed at ascertaining knowledge of the main topics covered. Attending lessons is strongly recommended for better exam preparation. However, the program already includes supplements for students who could not attend.
There are no intermediate tests or exams with partial programs: students must present all the teaching units for the exam, without exception. Students must register through the appropriate links on the University website: only in this case can the exams be regularly recorded.
