Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the fundamental notions of the philologist's work and in particular the tools to prepare an edition qualified as a critic. The problems concerning the edition of texts whose transmission is mainly linked to typographical work will be taken into consideration.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student must acquire:
· knowledge of aspects and problems of textual bibliography and traditional philology
· knowledge of aspects and problems of the author's philology
· knowledge of aspects and problems of born digital texts
· ability to apply the philological methods learned also to other texts of Italian literature.
· ability to read and comment on status variants and author variants.

Course syllabus
The philology of printed texts (or textual bibliography) has different aspects and characteristics compared to the so-called traditional philology which studies texts transmitted by one or more manuscripts. Having highlighted these fundamental differences, attention will initially focus on the first printing presses, not only in Italy, and on humanistic-Renaissance book production. In particular, incunabula (15th century prints) and 16th century prints will be studied, with exercises on individual concrete cases to understand how the critical edition of a printed text published between the 15th and 16th centuries is prepared. Through the study of the evolution of printing techniques and the book market, the figure of the modern publisher will be investigated. Some lessons will be dedicated to the so-called author's philology, especially in cases where it is possible to reconstruct the evolutionary phases of a text. The last lessons will be dedicated to philology in the digital age, for the edition of born digital works. There will also be exercises on author's philology and philology in the digital age.
Prerequisites for admission
No prerequisites are requested. The class is conducted entirely in Italian.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam (entirely in Italian) consists of an interview aimed at ascertaining the preparation of the students, the ability to exploit specific knowledge, the properties of exposure, the specialized language.
The final evaluation of the exam is expressed out of thirty.

Attendance at lessons is strongly recommended.

Students unable to attend lessons are invited to go to the reception desk by the teacher, who will provide precise indications on the supplementary bibliography with which to replace attendance. The course program is valid until February 2024.
Students with any disabilities are kindly asked to contact the teacher in order to agree on alternative examination methods, in agreement with the competent office.
