Learning objectives
The objective of the course is to study the theory and the design of biometric systems, the best practice in the deployment and privacy compliant biometrics with specific reference to classical systems, behavioral biometrics, mobile systems, continuous authentication methods, profiling and recent trends.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have acquired the ability to understand the structure and the functionality of biometric systems, the best practices (taking into account also the privacy of the users) about the deployment in general purpose solutions and with specific reference to the specific use cases studied during the classes.

· Fundamentals of the theory of biometrics;
· Complements of image processing for biometrics;
· Complements of signal processing for biometrics;
· Complements of pattern recognition for biometrics;
· Measurement and statistical estimation of the main parameters of biometric systems;
· Estimation and application of the quality of the biometrics traits;
· Complements of facial biometrics;
· Contact and contactless fingerprint and palm biometrics;
· Complements of voice biometrics;
· Behavioral biometrics;
· Soft biometrics and unconstrained biometric systems;
· Fusion and multimodal biometrics;
· Crypto-biometric system and cancelable biometrics;
· Biometric systems for mobile devices;
· Continuous authentication for monomodal and multimodal systems;
· Biometrics for ambient intelligence;
· Advanced border control systems;
· Biometrics systems in surveillance;
· Spoofing and anti spoofing of biometric systems;

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam is composed by a single compulsory closed-book test to be filled using the PCs in the laboratory requiring the solution of exercises and questions about the application and the design of biometric systems, and multiple choice questions to verify the knowledge of theoretical notions of the same type and difficulty of the cases proposed and discussed during the course. The duration of the exam is about 1 hour. The grade is expressed in thirtieths. The results of the written tests will be communicated through the official e-mail account.
