Learning objectives
To train geologists able to understand the geological processes that rule the different types of sedimentary basins, framed in a geodynamic scenario. Provide the tools required to apply the study of sedimentary basins in hydrocarbon research.
Expected learning outcomes
Ability to understanding of the processes that control the development of sedimentary basins, improving the competence in interpreting the georesource potential (in terms of hydrocarbons) of sedimentary successions. Knowledge and understanding in the interpretation of the evolution of sedimentary basins and oil potential. Interpretation of seismic profiles and of the thermal history of a sedimentary succession.
Single course

This course can be attended as a single course.

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Responsible
Lesson period
First semester
Class lectures will be, at least at the beginning of the course, on line. As soon as the situation will improve, the lectures will be held in the class.
Prerequisites for admission
It is suggested, for a better acquisition of the competences and skills, to have previously attended the courses of "Sedimentology and Laboratory" and "Stratigraphy and Laboratory". Anyway, the course can be attended by all students of the Master's Degree in Earth Sciences
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an oral interview to evaluate the competence of the candidate, ragarding general and practical aspects of the concepts discussed during the lessons and practical activities. The exam specifically includes a comment/interpretation of a seismic profile to verify the practical skills acquired during the practical activities.
Basin Analysis, Hidrocarbon Geology
Course syllabus
Types of sedimentary basins and their classification (framed in the plate tectonic model): morphological and sedimentological features; tectonic factors controlling their development. Present-day examples and from the geological record.
Teaching methods
Class lectures, one-day field trip
Teaching Resources
Busby & Ingersoll: "Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins" Cambridge, MA : Blackwell Science, 1995
Research papers and slides used during the lessons/practical activities (stored in ARIEL)
Practical Basin Analysis, Hidrocarbon Geology
Course syllabus
Elaboration, study and interpretation of subsidence curves. Organic matter in sediments: characterization methods, significance, hydrocarbon potential. Identification of petroleum plays and evaluation. Exploitation of hydrocarbon systems. Principles of seismic reflection and geological interpretation of seismic profiles from sedimentary basins developed in different tectonic settings.
Teaching methods
Class lectures and exercises on the subjects of the laboratory. One day field trip, to apply the theoretical concepts.
