Learning objectives
- to indroduce the student to the etiopathogenesis of diseases, with a specific focus on neuropathology
- to acquire basic knowledge about psychiatric drugs, mechanisms of action, therapeutic use, side effects and toxicity
- to acquire basic knowledge about drug interaction
- to acquire basic knowledge about pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology
Expected learning outcomes
The student will understand how diseases develop and will learn the basics of neuropharmacology.

Pharmacology
Course syllabus
1. General principles of pharmacodynamics: drug-receptor interaction and its effect.
2. General principles of pharmacokinetics: absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs.
3. General principles of pharmacogenetics: individual variability of response to drugs and toxicity.
4. Herbal products and supplements.
5. Drug interactions: interactions between drugs, between drugs and food, between drugs and herbal products/supplements.
6. Clinical drug development and generic drugs.
7. Pharmacovigilance.
8. Main mediators, receptors and neurotransmission pathways of the central nervous system involved in the action of drugs

Experimental medicine and pathophysiology
Course syllabus
1. Homeostasis. Health and disease. Etiology and pathogenesis.
2. Basic Immunology: innate and acquired immunity. Functions and disorders of the immune system.
3. Cell injury: biochemical and molecular mechanisms. Causes of cell injury: hypoxia and ischemia, free radicals.
4. Cell death: necrosis and apoptosis.
5. Inflammation and repair. Overview of inflammation. Acute inflammation: reaction of blood vessels, recruitment of leukocytes and phagocytosis. Mediators of inflammation: histamine, nitric oxide, PAF, arachidonic acid derivatives, complement system, cytokines and chemokines. Chronic inflammation: morphologic patterns, mediators, granulomas. Tissue regeneration and repair: healing of skin wounds and fibrosis.
6. Atherosclerosis and its complications. Stroke and TIA among the causes of aphasias.
7. Cell adaptation: hypertrophy, hyperplasia, hypertrophy, athrophy, metaplasia.
8. Neoplasia. Characterization of benign and malignant neoplasms. Cellular and molecular hallmark of cancer. Cancerogenesis: chemical, radiation and microbial carcinogens. Metastasis. Angiogenesis. Clinical aspects of neoplasia.

Neuropathology
1. Neuropathology of Down syndrome, phenylketonuria, Rett and X fragile syndrome
2. Neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, cerebrovascular diseases. Molecular and genetic bases.
3. Choreas: Huntigton disease, Sydenham chorea. Molecular and genetic features.
4. Ethiopathogenetic and neurochemical aspects of depression and schizophrenia
5. Multiple sclerosis
6. Toxic and metabolic diseases of the Central Nervous System. Viruses and the SNC
