Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge of the fundamental concepts of chemistry and biochemistry underlying the metabolism and functionality of the organism.
Expected learning outcomes
Students:
a) know the fundamental principles of molecular, cellular and biochemical mechanisms related to the body's patho-physiology;
b) understand the importance of applying the concepts of basic research to translational research;
c) they approach critically the international scientific literature to write short review on specific topics.

High school scientific skills.
Teaching methods
Lectures, exercise training, team works.
Each CFU is composed by frontal lessons and innovative teaching time. The innovative activities consist in deepening matters that are included in the course program, in agreement with the teacher.
Chemistry module: the innovative teaching activities consist in setting up the "Sportello Chimico" in Teams mode to allow students, by appointment agreed with the teacher, to ask for additional "personalized" or small group explanations, to correct assigned exercises together, to resume parts of the program; in the assignment of a written exercise in the classroom, corrected by the teacher, which will allow students to obtain from 0.5 to 1 point, to be added to the outcome of the final exam; in carrying out a summary exercise of the topics covered, in groups, in presence, at the end of the course.
Biochemistry module: small groups of students will study a few articles from the international medical scientific literature (pubmed); present their study to the colleagues and their activity will be considered for the final exam.

Assessment methods and Criteria
One written test with open and multiple choice questions for chemistry program and one oral test for Biochemistry program.
The written test allows the use of the periodic table of the elements and calculator for the written test. Test score will be published on Ariel website. This test score is required for the Biochemistry oral test admission, which leads to an independent score. The final score of the candidate , registered in the student career, will be obtained by the weighted average of the two scores.
