Learning objectives
The course provides knowledge on the main diseases of the oral mucosa, and the methods of transmission of the infectious pathology and prevention of cross-infection.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to describe the clinical manifestations of the most common diseases that affect the oral mucosa and will be able to implement preventive strategies to avoid the transmission of infectious disease and cross infections.

Prerequisites for admission
In order to adequately address the themes related to oral medicine, basic knowledge of anatomy, histology and general pathology is considered necessary.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Assessment of knowledge consist of a written exam. This consists of 32 multiple choice questions for which one answer only is correct and worth 0.75 points, and of 5 questions for which all suggested answers may be right or wrong and each correct answer is worth 0.3 points.

Course syllabus
Introduction to oral medicine: general objectives.
Oral ulcers: traumatic ulcers, infectious ulcers, ulcers as expression of autoimmune diseases.
Spots: white spots (leukoplakia, verrucous proliferative leukoplakia, oral lichen planus); red spots (eritroplachia); dark spots (physiological hyperpigmentation, iatrogenic hyperpigmentation, nevi and melanotic spots, malignant melanoma).
New growths: traumatic fibroma, pyogenic granulomas, warts and condylomas.
Oral cancer.
Elderly related conditions: xerostomia, hyper-salivation, candidiasis, denture stomatitis.
Oral-facial pain: burning mouth syndrome, idiopathic persistent pain, atypical odontalgia.
Correlations between systemic diseases and pathologies of the oral mucosa.
Oral manifestations of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
Teaching methods
Teaching is done through lectures involving discussion of clinical cases.

Oral Hygiene Techniques in the oncological patient:
- Oral hygiene techniques in the oncological patient

Oral Hygiene Techniques in hospitalized patients and special needs:
The module intends to provide the knowledge related to the elaboration of care plans and social dental education projects for the elderly patient in long-term care contexts.
The course provides the basic knowledge for a multidisciplinary approach to the bibliographic research of the material and the coherent reading of the epidemiological and demographic data, hints on the GRADE system for the drafting of a protocol of preventive dental care in RSA, the treatment of real cases in long-term hospitalization hospitalization and the disquisition on the main anamnestic, pathological and therapeutic needs for the frail patient.
