Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge of tools, standards and methods for research, creation, management, circulation and the reuse of metadata and documentation, analogue and digital, with a practical reference to systems designed for the management of electronic resources, libraries and other preservational institutions.
Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to conceptual models of data, standards, formats and tools for creating, managing, using and circulating between different systems. The fundamentals of Digital Humanities, in which the digital library economy (Digital Librarianship) is moving, will also be outlined.
Students will be able to apply the knowledge they have gained to create and reuse metadata in order to represent, organize and preserve documentary, analog or digital collections. They will also learn the use of software dedicated to the management of such collections and the circulation of data.
In particular, with the use of open source tools such as cms Omeka and rms Zoteror, students will be able to experiment with the creation, circulation and reuse of bibliographical metadata and electronic resources to properly manage and organize digital objects and texts.
Students will also have to demonstrate that they understand how to communicate their learned content clearly and correctly and that they have mastery over the specialized lexicon of the material.
The lessons will be supported by guided tours of libraries, participation in events or experienced talks from professionals active in the management of documentary streams.
Interested students will also be able to attend a workshop of "Theories and techniques of bibliographic cataloguing in a computerized environment " in the second semester.
All students, attending and non-attending who wish to prepare for the 9 or 6-credits exam, must come to an agreement with the instructor on a research programme and relevant texts for a specific research theme which has peaked their interest as a result of following the course or the reading of the exam texts.

Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is strongly recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is delivered through frontal lectures aimed primarily at the acquisition of knowledge both theoretical and practical, competence and specific language of the subject. Discussion with the teacher in the classroom is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the capacity to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.
The teaching is also based on didactic and multimedia material provided on Ariel.
All students, both attending and non-attending, who intend to prepare for the 9 or 6 credit exam must agree with the teacher on a research program and related texts on a specific topic that has aroused their interest following the attendance of the course or the reading of the exam texts.
