Field Practical Approach in Podiatry and Veterinary Podiatric Surgery

Learning objectives
The activity is part of the practical training. It takes in cattle farms and aims to introduce the student of the 5th year course to the professional reality of the veterinary surgeon who works in the farming field, with specific attention to podiatry and veterinary podiatric surgery
Expected learning outcomes
The student will acquire in a direct way manual skills of approach to the patient that are part of the skills necessary to professionally face the management of spontaneous pathology in the considered species.

Identification of environmental risk factors related to bovine lameness. Evaluation of locomotion and identification of lameness via "Mobility score". Restraint of the cattle with related equipment and necessary materials. Trimming and treatment of foot injuries. Regional intravenous anesthesia of the distal limb. Dressings and principles of therapy. Prevention of lameness.
Prerequisites for admission
Having followed the first four years of the Veterinary Medicine course of study.
Teaching methods
The teaching is given during the practical laboratory, in the stable, using as examples the farm structures, the herd breeding method and analyzing the health status of the animals present.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Learning is verified through discussion, during the lesson, and with the execution of the basic intervention procedures taught, directly on the animals.
