Learning objectives
Aim of the final exam - which includes the development of an experimental research project, in the production of a written dissertation, and in its oral presentation and critical discussion - is to provide students with a deep and factual understanding of the scientific method in the biological field and of its practical application to nutritional and food-related topics.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the activities related to the final exam, students should have acquired the ability to define and deepen a scientific problem, to design an experimental strategy to address it, to carry out the experimental activities needed, and to interpret their results. Students - thanks to the laboratory and/or clinical activities performed, mainly within a structured research team - should have acquired the ability to link novel results from an experimental research in the field of biology to what was already established in the scientific community, to communicate effectively in written and oral form biological and nutritional notions, and to tackle, during their future professional career, the study of emerging nutritional and food-related issues.

Prerequisites for admission
Having acquired a total of at least 75 credits (CFU) by having passed the exams of all courses included in the study plan, as well as having acquired the additional 3 CFU associated to the posses of a knowledge of the English language at the level B2 or higher.
Having completed the traineeship for the developement of an original research project and written the related report in the form of a written dissertation (Master thesis)

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam is structured as a discussion of the written dissertation prepared by the candidate, drawn up in Italian or in English, reporting the experimentations performed during the traineeship, in a public session in front of an exam Committee of at least five members, who will express a final comprehensive evaluation in 110th, based on the presentation ability of the candidate, and his/her competence and self-confidence in replying to the questions asked by the Commission, as well as on the evaluation of his/her entire career.
In details, the final score is computed by adding to the ponderate mean of the score obtained in all the exams passed during the carreer, expressed in 110th, a further amount of points defined according to the following scheme: very excellent evaluation, 9 points; very good, 8 points; good, 7 points; fair, 5/6 points; more than sufficient, 3/4 points; barely sufficient, 1/2 points. One additional point (within the 9 total score) will be awarded to students who completed their thesis stage abroad or passed at least 3 exam abroad withis the Erasmus program. Should the total evaluation exceed 110/110, the President of the Committee can propose to award "cum laude", provided that all member of the Committee approve such decision.
