Learning objectives
The course is the first step in French language learning and acquisition as part of the three-year language study programme and is aimed at students of all levels: from beginners to advanced. At a theoretical level, the study of the relationship between oral and written code is proposed through phonemes and graphemes and the study of morphosyntaxis and phrase in contrasting optics with Italian. At a practical level, the development of reception, production, interaction and mediation is proposed at different levels, corresponding to CEFR levels A1, A2 and B1.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the phonetic system, its representation in API, spelling correspondence, knowledge of contrastive analysis applied to morphosyntax, knowledge of the basic vocabulary (1500/2000 words), knowledge of the self-assessment grid of one's language level according to the CEFR. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: achievement of B1 level not yet complete for all linguistic-communicative activities: reception (listening and reading), production (short exposés on the topics studied, writing under dictation and short texts), interaction (exchanges limited to the topics studied) and mediation (short presentations of a text) and development of the related strategies. Linguistic analysis of written and oral code, morphosyntax, sentence and text.

Course syllabus
The course is entitled Norm and variety in contemporary French and consists of the following three teaching parts, which will be teached in sequence:

A (20 hours): Graphemes and Phonemes of French [Prof. Monica Barsi]
B (20 hours): Italian and French comparative analysis
C (20 hours): Varieties of French

The course provides 9 ECTS. It is not possible to accrue only 6 ECTS.

In the first part of the course, the focus will be on the correspondence between graphemes and phonemes and the graphic and phonetic transcription of words and sentences. In the second part, the linguistic analysis will focus on contrastive aspects between Italian and French with regard to morphosyntactic structures and main rhetorical strategies. In the third part the varieties of French will be illustrated, in particular the differences between spoken and written language. During the course, the Common European Framework of Reference will be presented in order to reflect, through a guided self-assessment, on the linguistic level achieved according to the descriptors of the Global Scale.

The course programme is valid until September 2025. From the 2026 winter session, exclusively the A.A. 2024-25 course programme will be valid.
Prerequisites for admission
None.
Erasmus students or students of other forms of mobility are admitted, provided they have comprehension skills in Italian.
Teaching methods
The course adopts the following teaching methods: classroom lessons and online activities. In addition, the course is supplemented by practical classes, for which please refer to the Esercitazioni form. For this academic year see the provisions for the emergency phase.

Information for non-attending students
The programme for non-attending students is unchanged from that for attending students. Naturally, in view of the greater difficulties involved in independent preparation, it is recommended that non-attending students devote an appropriate amount of time to studying and working through the contents of the programme.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Written and oral examination:

Written part: grammar test (20 min.); lexical test (20 min.); dictation-translation; two tests (40+50 min) on the contents of the monographic course.

Oral part: vocabulary and grammar test (not preliminary to the Written part); presentation of one's own linguistic profile according to the CEFR self-evaluation grid, to be carried out when all written and oral parts have been passed.

The exam consists of the described tests evaluated in 30ths. The grade of the language exam will be unique and will take into account the outcome of all the tests: the average of all the parts of the language that must be equal to 18/30 or a higher grade and the average of the votes of the monographic course of which each part must be equal to 18/30 or a higher grade. The written and oral exams relating to the same year may be taken in free succession, but the oral part of the monographic course is necessarily conclusive. At the end of the latter part of the oral examination, i.e. the presentation of one's own linguistic profile, the final vote will be calculated.

Students who have obtained a B1 and higher certification or an Esabac (since 2017) must only take the written grammar text, written and oral part of the monographic course.

International students or incoming Erasmus students are invited to contact the teacher as soon as possible. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be agreed with the teacher, in agreement with the competent office.
