General chemistry: Atoms and their structure. Quantum numbers and atomic orbitals. The periodic properties of the elements. The chemical bond: ionic compounds, covalent bond, metallic bond. Hybrid orbitals. Molecular orbitals. Shapes of molecules and Lewis formulas. The VSEPR model. Solid state. Ideal and real gases. Brief accounts on thermodynamics and kinetics. Liquis state and solutions. Intermolecular forces and state diagrams. Arrhenius, Brønsted-Lowry and Lewis acids and bases. Strengths of acids and bases. Ion-product of water and pH. Brief accounts on electrochemistry.
Stoichiometry: Matter and measurements. Avogadro's number. The mole. Atomic and molecular weight. Molar weight. Quantitative meaning of chemical formulas. Weight composition of a chemical compound. Molar and ponderal relations in a reaction. How to balance a chemical reaction wit or without electron trasnfer. Quantitative meaning of a balanced reaction. Limiting reactant. Yield of a chemical reaction. Solutions and concentrations. Ideal gases and relative laws. Chemical equilibrium: equilibrium constants, the effect of concentration, pressure and temperature variations. Ionic equilibria in aqueous solution: strong and weak electrolytes; neutral, acidic and basic solutions; pH and pOH. Calculation of the pH for strong and weak acids and bases. Mixing acid and bases: hydrolysis and buffer solutions. Precipitation equilibria: solubility and solubility-product constant. Effect of the presence of a common ion and of the pH on precipitation equilibria. Calculation of the potential of a galvanic cell. Nerst's equation.
Prerequisites for admission
No preliminary knowledge is required. For both the general chemistry and the stoichiometry part, the course starts from the fundamentals.
Teaching methods
The course will be held through frontal lessons, both for the general chemistry and the stoichiometry part. Many exercises will be solved and discussed in class. The Power Point presentatuions of all the lessons will be available on the Ariel site of the course.
Attendance and active participation to the lessons are highly recommended.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The learning outcome will be verified by a three-hour written test on all the topics of the course. The test will be comprised of six questions on general chemistry and three stoichiometry exercises, for a total score of 33 points (corresponding to "trenta e lode" mark). To pass the exam, the student must reach at least the score of 18/33.
The aim of the exam is to evaluate both the learning of chemical concepts, and the problem solving and reasoning skills of the student.
