Learning objectives
The course is intended to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to prepare and interpret financial statements of single companies and groups based on internationally recognised guidelines. More specifically, the course aims to illustrate the principles, methodologies and logics behind the preparation of financial statements according to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), also with regard to consolidated financial statements.
Expected learning outcomes

More specifically, the course aims to illustrate the principles, methodologies and logics behind the preparation of financial statements according to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), also with regard to consolidated financial statements.


Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will:

- know and understand the rules governing the preparation of financial statements, whether of a single company or of a group (consolidated financial statements), according to international accounting standards (IAS/IFRS);

- be able to apply this knowledge to prepare financial statements and consolidated financial statements according to international accounting standards (IAS/IFRS);

- develop learning skills to be able to autonomously expand their knowledge of topics related to international accounting standards and consolidated financial statements, with a view to responding to the needs of their future employers.

Course syllabus
The course is divided in two main parts.

The part on Financial Reporting under IAS/IFRS tackles the following topics:
- the provisions contained in the Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting;
- the documents and the presentation of the Financial Reporting according to the IAS/IFRS;
- the analysis of IAS/IFRS for the major items of international balance sheet.

The part on consolidated Financial Statements tackles the following topics:
- the concept of corporate groups and the role played by the consolidated financial statements as a tool for assessing the group's performances;
- the main theories of consolidation;
- the definition of the consolidation area;
- the phases of the consolidation process;
- the pre-consolidation operations and consolidation adjustments with reference to the first year of consolidation;
- the impacts of consolidation adjustments in the years subsequent to the first year;
- the characteristics of the consolidated financial statements.
Prerequisites for admission
No particular pre-requisites are required, except for the knowledge of basic accounting concepts and tools.
Teaching methods
The course is made up of theoretical lessons, analysis of cases, and practical exercises.
