Learning objectives
The workshop will enable the student to acquire a general understanding of the co-production of public services, seen as an example of practical collaboration that redesigns the relationship between public administration and citizens. In the literature, co-production is associated with the New Public Governance approach. The workshop aims to illustrate this relationship using theoretical reflections, testimonies and practical cases. The workshop has a limited number of places with a final exam scheduled for attending students.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will know - thanks to theoretical reflections, testimonies and practical cases - what the co-production of public services is and he/she will be able to underline the collaborative aspect that characterizes the relationships between citizens and public administrations.

Course syllabus
The workshop will revolve around the following topics:
- Introduction to the workshop: conceptual premises
- New Public Governance and New Public Management compared
- Co-creation and co-production of public services
- The role of the citizen: user, customer or co-producer?
- Focus on co-production in the healthcare sector
- Experiences of co-production supported by information technology
- Open questions and future outlook for co-production in the public sector.

NB: The order of the content and the depth of study may vary according to the interest shown by the students in the different topics.
Prerequisites for admission
The introductory nature of the course means that it is open to students who have no previous knowledge of the subject. It is, however, advisable that the student comes prepared with credits from economic-business courses.
Teaching methods
The Laboratory is made up of lectures, analysis of case studies and presentations.
Prof. Sorrentino will alternate classes with student assignments (including: presentations, discussions and web searches) to assess their learning and presentation skills.
Teaching Resources
Slides prepared by the teacher and extracts from articles and books distributed to the participants. Any relevant web page of interest will be reported during the course of the Laboratory.
Assessment methods and Criteria
To earn 3 CFU, the student will need to prepare presentations and research via the web which will be assessed according to the following criteria:
- Knowledge of the topics
- Appropriateness of terminology
- Ability for "transversal" interpretation
- Ability to think critically.
