Learning objectives
The laboratory aims to offer students a critical understanding of the main concepts and phenomena related to the development of environmental crimes, through a sociological approach that can place these phenomena within a broader panorama that also includes the experiences of social mobilization developed in response to environmental pollution, traffic in hazardous waste, land grabbing and other phenomena related to the current environmental crisis. Rudiments of environmental law and specific case studies will be analyzed in order to highlight the social, economic and political repercussions that environmental crimes have on certain communities.

Course syllabus
The program focuses on the in-depth study of issues related to environmental crime placed in the broader context of the ecological crisis that humanity is currently experiencing, with particular attention to the Italian context. In the first part, a toolbox will be provided which is useful for understanding the phenomena dealt with during the lessons. The main concepts of environmental sociology, the theories related to the tradition of green criminology and studies on organized crime that works against the environment will therefore be studied in depth. Fundamentals of environmental law will then be provided from the point of view of national and international legislation and there will be extensive reference to the main types of environmental crimes present on the Italian and global scenario. In the second part of the workshop, the experiences of civil resistance and activism from the point of view of environmental justice will be dealt with. Extensive reference will be made to specific case studies that aim to investigate the economic, social and political consequences of environmental crimes and the intensive exploitation of natural resources on local communities.

Assessment methods and Criteria
At the end of the course, students will be asked to write a short paper (in Italian) about an argument regarding the topics covered during the course. Those who have at least 80% attendance (8 lessons out of 10) will be considered an attending-student.
