Learning objectives
The course aims at developing the knowledge of the Spanish legal system, especially in some of its most important areas (Constitutional law, Constitutional Justice, Constitutional law of the EU, Contract law, Criminal procedure). Particular attention will also be paid to the lexical and pragmatic aspects of legal Spanish, so that students will acquire and improve their ability to understand and critically discuss written scientific texts.
The classes will include interactive activities with students and the analysis of scientific materials (case-law discussion).

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the organization and functioning of the Spanish legal system;
- Understand Spanish legal papers that range from judgments of the Spanish Constitutional Court to contracts/legal documents;
- Understand and use correctly Spanish legal terminology.

- General presentation and introduction to the course of Legal Spanish; introduction to Spanish Law and practice of the Spanish legal language;
- Introduction to the Spanish legal system; sources of Spanish Law;
- Constitutional Law: History of Spanish constitutionalism, State powers and form of government;
- The Spanish model of constitutional justice;
- Spanish judicial power and judicial system;
- The principle of sustainability in Spain; the right to food and water and the perspective of Latin America;
- The law against food waste in Spain: principles and regulation.

- Civil law (contract law);
- Criminal procedure in Spain: words and structure;
- Case-law analysis (5 classes).

Prerequisites for admission
Good knowledge of Spanish language (B1/B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Further practice of basic skills for those students who do not have this prerequisite is strongly suggested. A formal language certification is not required. The course will be taught in Spanish.
Teaching methods
The course will be developed through theoretical lessons and case-law discussion.

The exam will be oral and it will assess the students' acquired skills on law and language.
