Learning objectives
- Identify the main diseases of the gastrointestinal tract
- know the main diseases of the renal system;
- to know the interactions between the various pathologies and the possible consequences on nutritional aspects in order to identify the appropriate dietary approach measures;
- to know the physiopathological mechanisms and to describe a dietary-behavioural pathway which is individualised to the patient and to any concomitant pathologies which may require it.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will have the knowledge on the principal gastrointestinal diseases, as far as epidemiology, clinical manifestations and diagnostic techniques are concerned.

The students understand the pathophysiological features of acute and chronic diseases and recognize the most relevant signs and symptoms of renal diseases.

Ability to make a nutritional diagnosis for different diseases and to elaborate indications and appropriate dietary plans for individuals and populations, in a preventive and therapeutic sense.

Nephrology
Course syllabus
Approach to the patient with renal disease: how to recognise the presenting syndromes of the patient with renal disease (nephritic syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, isolated urinary changes, rapidly progressive renal failure, chronic renal disease), how to measure renal function (glomerular filtrate, tubular function, endocrine function), which tests are useful in the diagnosis of renal disease and urinary sediment analysis.
Approach to the patient with new renal failure: how to distinguish acute from chronic renal failure, how to distinguish the different forms of acute renal failure (prerenal, parenchymal, obstructive); intrahospital acute renal failure: when to think about decompensation, sepsis, contrast nephropathy, dehydration, drug nephritis and atheroembolism.
How to recognise the endocrine changes typical of renal failure, when and which investigations to ask for to investigate hyporigenerative anaemia, vitamin D deficiency and hyperparathyroidism.
