Learning objectives
The aims of the teaching course on Nervous System Diseases is to provide the students with knowledge about anatomo-functional aspects, pathophysiological concepts, and diagnostic procedures to understand the various diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, including the diseases of the muscle of neurological origin.
Students will be provided with neuroepidemiological teaching on the main neurological diseases, particularly thise usefule for understanding the mechanisms of the disease and those that have a string impact on social and health system organization.

The course will also provide teaching elements on the principal instrumental and laboratory techniques utilized in the diagnosis of the diseases of the nervous system (lumbar puncture, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine techniques, neurophysiopathological techniques, such as electroencephalogram, evoked potentials, electromiography). Finally, the teaching course will provide fundamentals and elements on the therapeutic aspects of the neurological diseases.

Central to the teaching of the Nervous System Disease course are the concepts of the localization of the lesion (central versus peripheral, level of lesions) and the correlation with other aspects of medicine in an integrated and not focalized vison of the specialty.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the teaching course, the student will be able to utilize the information received about the nervous system diseases, including the main aspects of anatomo-functional and pathophysiological type. In particular, the student will have to be able to:
- Localize the lesion site within the nervous system (central, peripheral including the muscular apparatus).
- Perform a first approach of differential diagnosis of the main neurological syndromes (e.g., headache, loss of consciousness, motor deficits, visual disturbances, etc. etc.).
- Provide sufficiently detailed information about the main neurological diseases.
- Have basic notions on therapy principles of neurological diseases and on the current new perspectives in this field.

Principles of neurosurgical techniques. Intracranial hypertension and brain hernias. Hydrocephalus. Neurotraumatoloy (epidemiology, patient assessment, symptoms, neuroimaging and principles of therapy). Traumatic lesions of the spinal cord (symptoms, neuroimaging and therapeutic indications). Cauda equina syndrome. Neuro-oncology (epidemiology, clinical aspects, hystology, and therapeutic principles).
